Obituary of Mildred “Millie” Loretta Sorenson:
Longtime Alaskan Mildred “Millie” Loretta Sorenson, 83, of Seward, died July 29, 2005 at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage surrounded by her family after a short battle with skin cancer, which had spread to her lungs.
Services were held at Seward Resurrection Bay Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 3rd. Visitation at 1:00 p.m. Burial at the Seward Pioneer Cemetery.
Mildred Loretta Heinbaugh was born August 14, 1921 in Muskegon, Michigan, the oldest child of Wayne & Esther (Newman) Heinbaugh. She attended Marquette Grade School, Vanderlaan Junior High, and Muskegon High School. Millie married Christian Edward Sorenson on December 23, 1939, and they had five children.
As true pioneers, they spent a month traveling the Alcan Highway before arriving in Anchorage. As there was no road to Seward at that time, they completed their journey by train, arriving on June 4, 1948. Millie had four small children and was expecting the fifth during her first Alaskan adventure.
Millie was former President of the Pioneers of Alaska, Auxiliary No. 9, being elected Queen in 1996. She enjoyed playing bingo, flower gardening, and baking for a steady stream of family and friends.
Her family wrote: “Mom warmed our hearts with cinnamon rolls and lots of love - one mission in life, to ensure that everyone was well fed. She was loved by all who knew her, and was adopted by a few other friends as their Mom.”
Millie is survived by her children: Darlene (John) Crawford – Seldovia; Dona (Tom) Walker – Seward; Jacquelyn (Bill) Booher – Hesperia, MI; and Dale (Sandra “Midge”) Sorenson – Seward. Grandchildren: Kimberly (Dan) Costa; Norman (Jackie) Kashevaroff; Crystal (Kim) Collier; Don (Sandra) Kashevaroff; Dorene Lorenz; Lisa Lorenz-McMurray; Brian Walker; Michelle (Richard) Wallace; Paul Booher; and Chris Booher. Great-grandchildren: Amanda Tennant; Chancelen, Colton, Courtney & Calem Collier; Alyssa, Zachariah, Allison, Micah & Ashley Kashevaroff; Donald Glee Kashevaroff II; Casmir Billsborough; Brendan & Justin McMurray; Shane, Michael, Lauren & Destiny Walker; Cameron, Hillary & Gabriella Wallace; and Stetson Booher. Sister: Monell Dahl – Michigan, and sister-in-law, Agnes “Lee” Heinbaugh – Michigan. Special friend: Milly Lindall.
She was preceded in death by one son, Christian Lee Sorenson, JR on March 15, 1982; her husband, Christian Edward Sorenson on October 18, 1999; and brother Donald Glee Heinbaugh on June 14, 2005.
